Summer Museum Assistants

What You Will Do

Interested in local history? Looking for opportunities to gain experience and grow your employable skills? We just might be the summer position for you! 

​

Our Summer Staff:

  • Research & create a temporary exhibit.​

  • Give docent tours of our exhibits. 

  • Plan & lead community programs & events for children, families, & seniors.

  • Answer phones & in person requests for information.

  • Maintain our website & social media platforms & developing marketing materials like posters. 

  • Maintain our facility & heritage gardens through regular cleaning & weeding.

  • Work with our Curator on our artifact reorganization project.

Salary: $15.50/Hour for 35-40 hours/week 

Contract Length: 8-16 Weeks (dependent on grant)

Skills

Applicants must be a fulltime student over 15 years old. While all students are encouraged to apply, preference will be given to those with a field of study in related fields: history, museum or library studies, and English.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to problem-solve and show flexibility.

  • Self-motivated and works well as a team member.

  • Knowledge of local heritage information and Alberta tourism products is an asset but not necessary if willing to learn quickly through accessible sources.

  • Personable and able to convey accurate information to schools, groups, and individuals with high standards of customer service.

  • Clear communication skills through written English, detail oriented, and typing ability to document collections information in e.g. PastPerfect Database.

  • Familiarity with photographic/digitization equipment, as well as Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, or Google Suite, and social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as well as WeVideo productions.

  • Ability to lift and move up to 20 kg to be able to review collections.

  • Supply a Police Record Check to work with the vulnerable sector of children/seniors.

Grant Requirements

Our Summer positions are funded by the Young Canada Works and Canada Summer Jobs grants. Applicants must meet these requirements.

All Students Hired Must:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada.

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada.

  • Be between 16 and 30 years of ages at the start of employment.

  • Meet the eligibility criteria of the program for which you have been approved.

  • Be registered in the YCW candidate inventory and complete a Candidate Eligibility Form.

  • Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment and not have another full time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW.

  • Have been a full time student in the semester preceding their job with YCW and intend to return to full time studies in the semester following their job with YCW.

Our Interview Process:

  • If selected, your email will be returned to arrange an interview. 

  • Interviews are expected to take place between April 6 - 24. 

  • While we prefer to conduct interviews in-person, we are willing to make accommodations for students studying outside of central Alberta. 

  • Applicants are interviewed by our Personnel Committee of approximately 6 people. Each applicant is asked our pre-established questions and is assessed based on our rubric. 

  • We will ask about specific skills and experience related to the types of work you'd be doing for us, as well as questions about your time management and team work. Please be prepared to give specific examples of how you have shown these skills in the past. 

  • Each applicant is asked to give a three minute presentation on how you would convince a visitor to visit Millet. Applicants have access to a projector and are encouraged to display their creative skills.
