Washing Clothes in a Wooden Tub

What are you most looking forward to doing outside this summer?

We imagine Belle Bannister and her sister Winifred Atkins appreciated a sunny day when they were doing laundry with their wooden tub with a hand-cranked wringer.

This photo was taken in 1911, 4 years after the Atkins family emigrated from Ireland to Canada. Belle lived with her husband, Radcliffe Bannister, in the West Liberty district on what is now Heslup farm. Winifred Atkins taught at Hillside school from January 1920-June 1921. They lived in Millet at a time when the population was rapidly growing.
